Police use of surveillance technology does not increase public safety. It only contributes to systemic racism through flawed, inaccurate, and racially biased technology.
We’re asking the mayor to ban the use of this tech once and for all – it’s not about an individual officer or an isolated incident. This is about banning the use of a technological tool that perpetuates the cycle of police brutality and harm towards marginalized communities.
Mayor Durkan, we urge you to ban facial recognition and make clear that this harmful and racist tech has no place in our communities.
Trust must be restored, and this is just one step of many we hope you will take.
