Last week, Border Patrol arrested a 15-year-old girl after undergoing surgery at a Texas hospital. Despite living in the U.S. her entire life, she now faces deportation. No one should fear deportation for seeking healthcare, especially during a pandemic.

Border Patrol has previously preyed on vulnerable children in need of medical care beyond CBP checkpoints.   In 2017, CBP detained 10 yr old Rosa Maria at a checkpoint on her way to surgery.   No one should fear deportation for seeking health care, especially during a pandemic.

CBP has no place in hospitals and Border Patrol checkpoints have no place in our border region.  This child should be released immediately and Border Patrol held accountable for its actions.

The news of the death of a migrant while in custody is tragic and our thoughts are with his loved ones. Countless men, women, and children have died under the federal government’s custody and it highlights how dire the conditions in CBP’s facilities are.

The newest port of entry restrictions fail to consider the cultural and economic ties of border communities. They severely impact border commuters, mostly US citizens, who must cross for work or other essential visits.
