ACLU of Texas’s Tweets

Texas politicians have been working to strip away the freedoms of LGBTQIA+ Texans for years, but one thing is certain: we will always show up to protect each other, no matter what. Trans Texans will continue to show up in this world and shine brightly. #txlege

Join us in the fight for our lives. We'll be in the outdoor rotunda at the Texas Capitol at 1 pm, along with our beautiful and strong community of partners, families, friends, and allies. If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to act, this is it: We need you. It's time.

This is targeted, vicious, and unconstitutional discrimination. Even debating this bill — and the entire 137 bills filed this session that directly target LGBTQIA+ Texans — is harmful to our community. We won't accept this hateful bill.

Research shows that the healthcare targeted by this bill is: safe effective and life-saving. But Texas politicians want to cruelly strip away this vital care for trans youth — while allowing the same care to be provided to any other young person for any other reason.

The #txlege will soon debate #HB1686, a bill that would prohibit medically necessary healthcare for trans youth. Trans kids know who they are: Stop ignoring them, their parents, and doctors. Let us make the decisions we need to survive. 🔽

Trans adolescents face an unprecedented attack in a new bill. Some lawmakers want to take away control from parents and stop doctors from giving our community the care we need. Every Texan deserves the right to control our own bodies and access the care we need — no exceptions.

ACLU Stance: Oppose.

HB 1686 would ban doctors from providing life-saving, evidence-based, medically necessary care to trans youth. It targets transgender Texans and violates parents’ rights to make decisions about their children’s health. This bill is wildly unconstitutional and is a dangerous attack on the lives and existence of trans Texans.

Drag is joy, acceptance and liberation. Texas officials have no place in restricting drag performances just because they are uncomfortable with our art forms. Every Texan deserves to be able to express ourselves fully without intimidation from lawmakers.

“Don’t Say LGBTQIA+” bills will censor classroom instruction, isolate LGBTQIA+ students, and make it harder for everyone to receive a high-quality education. Let’s build a Texas where our students know they are worthy of dignity and visibility. #txlege

Whether our hair is long or short, straight or curly, locked or braided — our hair should not be a barrier to opportunities in school or in the workforce. There is no place for race-based hair discrimination in Texas. #PassTheCrownAct

Book banning bills are just another way Texas politicians want to control our lives. #TXLege is debating vague new censorship laws — designed to restrict what students can read and take control away from parents. Let us read books that reflect our lives and experiences. #HB900

Amidst a hateful wave of attacks against LGBTQIA+ Texans at the #txlege, we continue to show up for one another. Together, we’ll keep working for as long as it takes until every Texan is valued — no matter how we identify or who we love. #AllInForEquality #YallMeansALL

Some signs say "Trans People Belong", "Together Come Hell or High Water". Person in front is holding the trans pride flag. Some in the crowd have their fists in the air.

Texas politicians have no right taking away our freedom to make life-saving healthcare decisions with our family and doctors — whether we’re trans or not. We won’t let them. Join the fight at aclutx.org/volunteer
Dark blue background with quote on top. Quote: What this is really about is trying to get rid of transgender people, because there is a select group of politicians that profit from creating animus against my community. But whether we are supported or spurned, we continue to show up in this world and shine brightly. Unquote. Words underneath that say "Ash Hall they them Policy and Advocacy Strategist ACLU of Texas". Bottom right is person's head and shoulders.

This anti-drag bill is yet another political attack against LGBTQIA+ Texans. All of our rights are threatened when the government tries to ban life-saving health care, censor our identities, and prohibit artistic expression that has existed for centuries.

It's in the Constitution — Texas doesn't have the right to enforce immigration policy. Instead of overreaching into federal jurisdiction, Texas politicians should help border communities by investing in programs and infrastructure that meet our needs.

This isn’t new. As Texans of all races and backgrounds continue to elect leaders with new visions for our communities, politicians in Austin have been trying for years to invalidate local laws and oust local officials. We can’t let them.

The takeover of Houston ISD is part of a much larger campaign by state politicians to override elections they can’t win and replace leaders they can’t control — especially in majority Black and brown communities. Think: school boards, local government, judges.

The state takeover of HISD is not about public education — it's about political control of a 90 percent Black and brown student body in one of the country's most diverse cities. And it's not what our students and teachers need.
