We’re at the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee public hearing on voter ID bills. These bills are proposed every session and every session Maine rejects voter ID. That’s because voter ID is a classic voter suppression tactic and we know it.

Voter ID laws disproportionately affect people of color, low-income people, elderly voters, and people with disabilities – voters who are more likely to face obstacles in getting government-issued photo ID.

Maine is a leader in voter participation because we have progressive voting laws, including same day voter registration, no excuse absentee ballots, and we are one of two states that allow incarcerated people to vote.

Voting is a fundamental right, the bedrock of our democracy. Voter ID laws would be a stain on Maine's record as a leader on voter access and participation.
