On any given day, most of the people in ME jails haven’t been convicted of the crime they are in for. They stay days, weeks and even months, often because they can’t afford to buy their freedom.

It comes at an enormous human and fiscal cost. It costs taxpayers over $100 a day per person in jail - largely to hold people who haven’t even had a trial. That’s $$ we could be spending on community programs and things that actually improve public safety.
