Shoutout to the Skowhegan students who've come out to speak out for racial tolerance and who have been writing letters to the editors on the issue. Advocacy starts young!

Past votes to keep the "Skowhegan Indians" mascot are not a reason to avoid change now. Past decisions/mistakes are not an excuse to no longer move forward. Instead, our past should be the driving force behind our push for change.

"We will know that the Wabanaki are respected when the Wabanki tell us they are respected." We must listen to Indigenous peoples when they tell us that the use of Native-themed mascots is hurtful. It's time to move on.

"What do we try to teach our young people? Respect others. Listen. Ask permission. And don't take things that don't belong to you." These same principles can be used to analyze the use of Indigenous mascots. It's time to choose mascots that represent respect.

Thanks, @zlheiden for encouraging Mainers to "embrace this historic opportunity" to become the first state in the country to stop using Native peoples and cultures as mascots!

11-year-old Skowhegan student: "Native American people have been asking for too long for us to stop using Native mascots." Our children are able to recognize the need to listen to Indigenous voices, so should we.

"How can we encourage our children to grow and change if we refuse to grow and change ourselves."
