The fact that President Trump and his followers didn't succeed today doesn't change the facts: Members of Congress who wanted to set aside the Electoral College slate, and agitators who stormed the Capitol, were involved in a failed coup attempt.

These aren't protests — we know protests. These were acts of violence meant to overthrow the legitimate outcome of a democratic election.

What we saw today are violent acts meant to subvert the peaceful transfer of power, the very hallmark of our democracy. The people have voted. The states have certified their electoral votes. A peaceful transition to President-elect Biden is the only path forward.
