Today, members of the Electoral College will cast their ballots for the president. We’ve opposed the Electoral College since 1969.

There are many problems with the Electoral College. But the most fundamental is that it thwarts the basic principle of one person, one vote by awarding each state a number of electoral votes equal to its allocation of representatives plus its two senators.pic.twitter.com/L8RDp4LzIS

We need one person, one vote. So how do we get there? The ideal solution is a constitutional amendment to provide for the election of the President and Vice-President of the United States by direct popular vote.

But another option is the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. The NPVIC is an agreement between US states and DC to award all their electoral votes to whoever wins the overall popular vote in a presidential election — regardless of their own majority.

But this compact only becomes viable after states with electoral votes totaling at least 270 have passed the legislation — giving them the power to put the popular vote winner in the White House.

Instead of voters in a few swing states deciding the outcome, candidates will need to speak to — and listen to — ALL citizens throughout the country equally.

Adopting a National Popular Vote will help begin to: ✔️ Dismantle the racial, ethnic, and geographic disparities in voting power ✔️ Further core principles of democracy ✔️ Give all of us equal power in presidential elections
