The Fair Housing Act was passed by Congress in 1968 in an effort to curtail widespread segregation and discrimination in housing. It's one of the most critical pieces of legislation advancing racial and gender equity.

Last month, HUD rolled back critical protections in the Fair Housing Act's Disparate Impact Rule, which helped dismantle systemic barriers to fair housing, including unjustified polices, practices, or covert forms of discrimination.

If HUD succeeds in eliminating the rule's protections, this could mean: Landlords could evict survivors of domestic violence under policies punishing tenants for calling the police or for criminal activity in their homes. This could put them and their children at risk.

Tenants with prior criminal records could be denied housing due to overly restrictive criminal record bans –which will overwhelmingly harm Black and Latinx individuals.

A landlord could deny housing to anyone with a prior eviction record – regardless of whether the eviction was dismissed, filed on unlawful grounds, or occurred many years ago.

And it doesn't stop there: Earlier this year, HUD proposed a new rule allowing government-funded homeless shelters to turn away trans and gender non-conforming people.

HUD's attacks on fair housing affects marginalized groups – such as low-income women of color, trans people, and people with disabilities – putting our communities in danger.
