The requirement for people in medical debt to repeatedly come to court to explain that they're still poor was suggested by the debt collection lawyer in this case. This is the intended outcome. The point was always to jail people over their debt.

This is a better article. The judge doesn’t even have a legal background. He’s a cattle rancher who was appointed as a magistrate. This is not how debt collection works.
