I am unutterably delighted to learn that when a Portuguese person wants to express the thought ‘a bad workman blames his tools,’ she says instead that ‘A BAD DANCER BLAMES HIS TROUSERS.’

In Toronto, here’s former advisor revealing the “conservative” thinking behind the expressway decision. It’s just embarrassing.

PSA for anyone seeking reliable flu coverage: I've always admired Helen's work, and check her feed when stuff like the coronavirus hits. (No one immediately comes to mind for experts on public health in China, but curious if anyone else has recommendations?)

This was chilling as fuck. Walked out of my office in Moorgate around 10pm and there was this silent, ominous procession of guards dressed in black. No explanation that I could find. Weird City of London shit happening at night that you're not supposed to see.

"In all 4768 [clinical] trials Science checked, sponsors violated the reporting law more than 55% of the time...[the] FDA could have collected more than $6 billion in penalties so far. The agency has yet to demand a single dollar."

Interesting argument that "blue zone" longevity is an illusion of poor/fraudulent record-keeping: (Also, the abstract reads entertainingly snarky.)

This timeline's clearly going full Garth Ennis: superhumans are real, but they mainly use their powers to jerk off, fight & get incredibly high.

Isaac Newton’s groundbreaking work, PRINCIPIA MATHEMATICA, had trouble getting published because the Royal Society had unwisely invested in an expensive book on fish history, that bombed. Edmund Halley (then clerk of the Society) personally paid for Newton’s first edition.

Time for some true stories* from pulp magazines, brought to life by the wonderful art of Earl Norem! (*Bear with me on this one...)

Interesting piece on the language journalists use to describe cars hitting people & cyclists. (Leads with this wild fact: "Since 2013, deaths among pedestrians and cyclists on U.S. roads have risen by nearly 30 percent and 14 percent respectively"?!?)

A phenomenal $2.2 billion will be invested into Berlin's public transit system every year until 2035. This financial commitment should make the American public transit official weep with envy.

(From the same story: “Venture funds inundated start-ups with more than $207 billion last year, or almost twice the amount invested globally during the dot-com peak in 2000.” 😬, even with inflation, particularly since most aren’t spending on hard assets like fibre or etc...)

This whole story is wild, but the gist is that the NYT found “a distinctly modern version of the bait-and-switch,” with SoftBank-funded companies worldwide luring contractors to work for them then breaking promises to up revenues.
