Tonight we passed the Affordable Housing Overlay. After years of advocacy, it is now legal & possible to build affordable housing in every neighborhood by right. We been waiting for tonight for years! Here's our official statement tonight.

That article made a huge impression on a lot of people in Somerville (including me) and was a real goad to the city's 2019 zoning overhaul, which now matches most of the buildings that currently exist.

found, based on 2016 zoning, that only 22 residential buildings in Somerville conformed to the zoning code. Choice quote: "All those buildings you see: Are they so terrible that you’d like to pass a law making it illegal to build them again?"

For "Best Explainer", I'd have to throw in would be the excellent TODEX, from . This tool enormously useful when talking about TOD in MA, and helps contextualize things like the new "Zoned Out" report (). Amazing work.

As an MA-based YIMBY, I felt a bit lonely watching the awards, so shout out to my other friendly MA-based YIMBY groups and ! I think Somerville may have recently become one of the 1st cities where neighbors got together and asked for an *upzoning*!

Congrats to for their win and their work in this space! My immediate comment when receiving this nomination was "I am extremely honored to be among such cool people, but is the one who deserves the win." :) Happy to bring a bit of Cambridge to the table!

Flying under the radar but has articles at Special Town Meeting this fall to legalize ADUs AND eliminate single family zoning. I'm not sure about chances are passage, but add this to a list of pro-housing zoning reform being discussed in towns around Greater Bos.
