Why would there be no center support underneath?

That is my thought as well and why the street wasn't closed down for construction, when there is a crane in the far right of bridge

The fact that it’s just chillin there. Not temporary support while the cables aren’t there.

Thanks. And the middle? Should it be supported from underneath?

I would think that it would be since it’s going to be a cable stay. Since the cables aren’t installed yet, there should be a temporary support for that span until the cables are installed.

If the bridge wasn't safe enough to be open to pedestrians, it wasn't safe enough to allow cars to drive under it.

Well I’m guessing the reason why it wasn’t open to pedestrians is that it was incomplete... Where would anyone be going walking across a bridge that isn’t finished?

What were they thinking by not supporting the middle? You have to think about how strong the winds can be. That is a long bridge without a middle support. I'm deeply sorry for those who lost their life over someone foolishness.

lots of bridges that are larger without supports. thats not the reason. has to be engineering failure. someone didnt calculate deflection and loads properly

Our corrupt African leaders/politicians have another reason to justify shoddy work in our respective countries by referencing almighty America thus, "Even in America, a newly constructed bridge collapsed" Mark my words!!!
