I was just thinking the same thing. Why all the jokes and sarcasm?
Thank you now to the dive teams and water emergency response units from NYPD/FDNY- they are world class. Shout out to the ER&Trauma nurses at Bellevue. Looks like it might be a busy pm shift.
Wish it had equipped with some floating device to keep passengers safe
In the video, the skid ballons looked as if they were inflating.. looks like they may not have fully inflated.. maybe.. not sure.
couldn't the door be opened easily if emergency?
Depending on the airframe damage, doors are *designed* to open easily in emergencies. But a forced water landing is terrifying, cold, and hectic with just seconds to get out. Tour passengers would not have underwater egress training. Also injuries can mitigate any escape attempt.
Thats one of the most important things taught in flight school. If you can remember or have enough time. "crack the door open and latch it." especially on the PA28's. if the fuselage gets bent, you have a "better chance of egress" so they say. Hard to do with an empty right seat.
Derek, “crack the door” is airframe dependent. In the EC-120B helo I’m familiar with, doors stay closed and latched to keep airframe continuity/strength. Not sure about Liberty’s AS350. Pre-flight safety briefing is also key. Inexperienced passengers are their own worst enemy.
Im not familiar with Heli's at all honestly. Im fixed wing and in abt 70% of the birds ive flown, we crack the door provided its reachable. Cant get to them on rear ent fuselage but they mostly have emerg egress windows. I'll have to defer your knowledgeon the Heli's sir
Quite agree Derek my fixed wing training concurs with yours (though even there some will differ in opinion!) forces and angles do vary between fixed and rotary wing crashes and hence the difference I believe.
