The US admitted to flying a half mile from aircraft, which is no where near a near miss or reason to enter the aircraft into a steep dive. Incredibly misleading headline.

Passenger jets fly at around 500 miles an hour. At that speed, you cover a half a mile in well under 10 seconds. So even assuming the planes were flying in roughly the same direction, yeah...a half mile is a near miss.
