Did this happen during the Swine Flu in 2009? How about the Hong Kong flu of 1968? No. Why? Because people bought greeting cards then. People generally don't buy greeting cards today, which is why the industry came up short on supply. It's not because a million people died

People don't have to wait for people to DIE to send greetings. Millions & millions & millions of Seniors trapped in (poorly-regulated, seemingly neglected) nursing facilities would LOVE to get "snail mail".

Maybe the rush on sympathy cards is also for people who have lost their jobs, businesses, or homes to this over restrictive shutdown.

I’m quite sure it’s not because there are so many more deaths. It’s because we are not allowed to mourn with our friends and family at wakes, mass, shiva, burials, or Irish funerals. We can’t send flowers or bring over food. All we can do is send a card.
