It's food. Like he said, it is no big deal for him. When I was in ATL, a homeless person asked me to buy him a drink. He wanted soda and candy. I bought him 3 cases of soda and a bag of candy. My niece asked why I did that when he didn't ask for food.

My response: we have no idea what it was like to live on the streets. Something as simple as soda can make them feel "normal" if for a few moments. Many homeless share what little they have with each other. It was only 20 dollars to me but to him, it may have made his day.

What's that teaching the prospective perp? At least make him earn it, sweep the floors, stock some shelves, clean the restroom. Then you get your meal. This teaches the kid that he can have something for nothing. World does not work that way.
