Really? Maybe they just smell because they're ripe and it has nothing to do with attracting animals. They also smell because they're rotting to keep animals away.

No, we know plants evolved fruits for animals. It's advantageous to produce attractive fruits, because the animals won't digest the seeds, and once all's said and done, there's a handy supply of fertilizer for the seed. Being smelliest when ripe helps coax more animals!

I don't know. Some fruit don't get a chance to get ripe. Them deer sure like to take them unripened apples off the tree.

That's because ripeness per se is relative; deer eat apples that we don't consider ripe, because they prefer them earlier in the apple's life cycle.
