It’s non conductive, ESD safe tape used in computer repair. I assume they use it on the space station to limit effects of static electricity... But I may be wrong

It's because it handles changes in temperature very well! The ISS experiences something like a 500 degree Fahrenheit change in temperature across its orbit, so you need something that insulates very well and doesn't expand or contract too much.

They build spaceships with the notion of 'being designed for space'. And it's true, it doesn't need to be that sturdy. But maybe it's time to rethink how one designs a 'space station'.

Why not run to the nearest Home Depot and get a roll of duck tape. They will save about 3 million dollars.
