They're not "immigrants" if they haven't followed the legal process of immigration and naturalization. According to U.S. federal immigration law, they are termed "illegal aliens"; and these families wouldn't be separated if they weren't breaking federal law.

Ok, once more...they are NOT immigrants. They are ILLEGAL ALIENS (as defined by LAW) who have entered the US ILLEGALLY and are being dealt with in accordance with the LAW.
