Not a surprise to the older teachers amongst us

And that’s the real problem. It shouldn’t be about fitting new things into old teaching, it should be about modifying teaching to be enhanced by new things. Old style classrooms and teaching are no longer acceptable.
-
While I agree that nobody wants to go back to the sage on the stage, I found that old fashioned pen and paper note taking has its place, even in the age of google, retention and a repertoire of language and facts is still useful. As professionals we choose what is appropriate.
-
Sure. I still have students who write things down because it is better for them. But the premise of how we do things needs to change. We need to be designing hands on tasks and ones that get Ss to create, not just absorb. Tech is fundamental to that.
-
All students should be writing things down on a regular basis. Studies have shown that writing or rewriting information is many times more effective than reading material in terms of memory.
-
True, but even more they should do projects that allow them to show their knowledge. None of this about writing is actually my point. The point was: this was a stupid study that simply put devices in a traditional lecture. If you want to see tech used well, change the teaching!
-
No disagreement on tech. But you also need to acquire knowledge before you can show it.

Kids can’t even write currently and don’t even know what cursive is!

It has changed teaching. Some good, mostly bad. Short attention spans, instant gratification, no “wonderment” of learning.

This is a ridiculous study. Of course the students were distracted by technology in a class designed to be w/out technology. But that’s shortsighted and narrow. Instead, we should be focusing on how to change instructional models so they’re enhanced by tech.

Heaven forbid they ask teachers what actually happens in the classroom and not some money hungry corporation who wants to sell their technology to say that it's gonna benefit education

I teach a blended classroom, so, when I use it, all technology is being used towards a common purpose. I just read in this article where the comparison was to a classroom where technology being used was unrelated to the classroom activities. I feel like that’s a no-brainer.
-
^^ what she said. My school is flipped and we use the tech to collaborate and present content. It’s not the technology itself that’s the problem, it is how it’s used and how we teach self regulation in its use.

And in my grandpa's day, all he needed was his slide rule! Each gen will have its own tech and have to find its path to integrate.

The fact it took research to come to this conclusion is a surprise in itself
