The human backup driver in an autonomous Uber SUV was streaming a television show on her phone just before fatally striking a pedestrian, according to police. https://abcn.ws/2yBQPjW pic.twitter.com/xhgsDUV1m2

A person time traveling from as late as 2005 would read this and not know what on earth was even said.

Letting auto-driving cars drive is a really bad idea

The human operator was on their phone... They're there because the technology is still on testing and they should be acting as if they're driving at all times. Driverless cars will never say you can take your eyes off the road.

Of course they will. That's the point. Are we going to replace truck drivers with truck sitting-in-the-driver's-seat-just-in-casers?

Maybe in 5 years when the technology is safe enough to actually warrant that? Autopilot has been around for years in aircraft, you don't see those flying around pilotless do you?

That's what RustBelt was saying. Letting auto-driving cars drive is a really bad idea because they miss things without human help.

For sure I can see that now. I still think the person was negligent though. You should always be paying attention, self driving is meant to help the driver focus more on the road and spend less energy on minor adjustments to speed and direction.

The person was negligent, technically, I guess... But driving is tedious enough on it's own. How engaged could you stay overseeing someone who's right 99% of the time? If a driverless cars isn't 100% accurate it's worse than nothing.

Yeah, I don't see a point for driverless cars unless they are driverless. I'd rather drive than watch a car drive for me. I want to be able to call my car, get in, work on my laptop, go to where I want to go, get out and have my car park itself.

They should make tablets and phones that don't work inside a running automobile. Auto and device companies could do this.

Another reminder to put your damn cell phone down while driving. Nothing is that important that you need to be taking calls or whatever on your phone. Human lives are at stake, including your own.
