One of the coolest things about being at is its location. Every evening walk is different in some way, not to forget the inspiring museums! My academic visitors absolutely love our research meetings at the coffee shop.

In 2013, Yitang Zhang gave a stunning proof on Bounded Gaps Between Primes. He's not a conventional academic by any standard. The dichotomy b/w being *free spirited* and the constraints of *tenure-track* (from his doctoral advisor) is interesting.

"I am often asked why there are so few applied mathematicians in the department. The reason is that all of MIT is one huge applied mathematics (AM) department; you can find AM in practicially every department at MIT except mathematics." Gian-Carlo Rota

Not seen this before! Hard for humans, easy for chimps. Or trivial for a robot with computer vision. For me a reminder of the many aspects of intelligence, and that memory and symbolic manipulation can be done by AI in different, much better ways than a human brain manages.

Inspiring visit to EMBL, Heidelberg with Prof. Leslie Valiant. This building was designed to mimic the double helix DNA structure. Never thought that there would be a day when I would see DNA sequencing, live. But now I have!

In harmonic analysis, it is well known that the Gaussian pulse achieves the optimal localization in time and frequency domains (Uncertainty principle). It's somewhat lesser known that Gaussians also achieve the sharpest possible constants in Young's convolution inequality.
