If Democrats take back the Senate and White House, the very first thing they do should be passing a new Voting Rights Act. Expanding the franchise and making it easier for people to vote is a prerequisite to accomplishing almost every other progressive policy.
Similarly, "what will you do to make it easier to vote?" is a question that every state and local elected official should be asked. Federal support for voting rights will be a welcome change, but so many restrictive policies originate at the state and local level.
Making it easier to vote also requires expanding the franchise. More than 5.1 million Americans are denied the right to vote due to a felony conviction. The 6-3 courts will block it.
1) End the filibuster. 2) Add four Supreme Court seats. 3) Make DC and PR states. 4) Start on the pile of bills stuck in the Senate, starting with the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. 5) Eighteen months from now, celebrate.
And potentially getting rid of the electoral college?
Need to expand the Supreme Court first, otherwise the crooks there now will simply knock everything else down.
