We don't often think of them as such, but the Reconstruction Amendments were, in a way, a new constitution. Parts of the 1789 constitution remained in place but the 13-15th Amendments provided the basis for a new system of gov't in which all people were viewed as, well, people.

It's easy to overlook just how transformative the Reconstruction Amendments were, especially since they did not alter the structure of the federal government (three branches, checks and balances, etc).

But the Reconstruction Amendments redefined the meaning of "We the People." The Fourteenth Amendment was a first step in transition America from a herrenvolk democracy into a real democracy. Redemption can be understood as a nullification of the Reconstruction constitution.
