More than 138,000 people locked up in state and federal prisons have contracted COVID-19. At least 1,165 of them have died. Their deaths were entirely preventable, but they were condemned to die by federal and state leaders who view their lives as expendable.

In Arkansas more than 40% of prisoners have contracted COVID-19. This was an entirely preventable crisis and it's jarring to see so many more people show more sympathy for a violent and racist president than they ever did for incarcerated people trapped in truly awful conditions.

All of this data counts only those in prisons. Thousands more have become sick in jails and other detention centers. On any given day, an estimated 460,000 people are locked up simply because they cannot afford bail. Official indifference has put all of their lives at risk.

All of this was completely preventable. In March and April, lawyers, activists, and public health experts were calling on governors to release people from prisons and jails to prevent the crisis that we knew would unfold. Their pleas were ignored.https://twitter.com/ScottHech/status/1254063566950367239 …

The Sentencing Project found that, as of early September, more than 1,700 children incarcerated in juvenile detention facilities had tested positive for COVID-19. More than 2,200 staff at those facilities had also tested positive. @SentencingProjhttps://www.sentencingproject.org/publications/covid-19-in-juvenile-facilities/ …
