All of this data counts only those in prisons. Thousands more have become sick in jails and other detention centers. On any given day, an estimated 460,000 people are locked up simply because they cannot afford bail. Official indifference has put all of their lives at risk.
All of this was completely preventable. In March and April, lawyers, activists, and public health experts were calling on governors to release people from prisons and jails to prevent the crisis that we knew would unfold. The Sentencing Project found that, as of early September, more than 1,700 children incarcerated in juvenile detention facilities had tested positive for COVID-19.
