In Arkansas more than 40% of prisoners have contracted COVID-19. This was an entirely preventable crisis and it's jarring to see so many more people show more sympathy for a violent and racist president than they ever did for incarcerated people trapped in truly awful conditions.

All of this data counts only those in prisons. Thousands more have become sick in jails and other detention centers. On any given day, an estimated 460,000 people are locked up simply because they cannot afford bail. Official indifference has put all of their lives at risk.

The Sentencing Project found that, as of early September, more than 1,700 children incarcerated in juvenile detention facilities had tested positive for COVID-19. More than 2,200 staff at those facilities had also tested positive.
