Both statements here are untrue. The Electoral College is the product of a meeting of 55 aristocratic white men who met for a few months who met for a summer in Philadelphia. Twenty-five of those men kept other humans in bondage. We do not owe them unlimited deference.https://twitter.com/shadihamid/status/1306230340638388224 …

Of course this doesn't mean we should reject the Constitution wholesale. But we also shouldn't view it as beyond critique and certainly not as the product of any remotely democratic process.

I am reminded of the words of Justice Thurgood Marshall on the bicentennial of the Constitution. "Nor do I find the wisdom, foresight, and sense of justice exhibited by the Framers particularly profound. To the contrary, the government they devised was defective from the start."pic.twitter.com/IkMRjAFXBU

Hamid's other point, that were no calls to abolish the electoral college until 2016 is also wrong. In 1970, the House overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment to abolish the EC. Southern senators, many of them segregationists, filibustered the bill.https://www.history.com/news/electoral-college-nearly-abolished-thurmond …
