One policy change announced today by Louisville's mayor is that @LMPD officers will be paid (through housing credits) to live within the city. This does NOT address the issue of police officers as outside agitators who are not part of the community they police.

The first issue is that this runs directly counter to demands to defund the police. Using more money to pay officers to live within the city is the exact opposite of that. We must be wary of "reforms" that direct more money and resources to police.

Another issue is that paying someone to live within a city's borders does not make them a part of the community. Even if you're interested solely in reform instead of defunding or abolition, this measure is inadequate.

Police not being a part of the the city they patrol is an issue in almost every major city. In the 75 largest cities, ~60% of officers don't live in the city they police. Mayor Fischer recognizes the problem, but his approach isn't the solution.https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/most-police-dont-live-in-the-cities-they-serve/ …
