Today lawmakers in Virginia passed legislation making it illegal for officers to have sex with someone in police custody. In many states, there's still no law prohibiting police officers from having sex with people they've arrested or placed in custody.
In 2018 there were 36 states that lacked laws prohibiting police officers from having sex with people in custody. A 2016 study funded by the National Institute of Justice looked at 6,700+ arrests of officers over a seven year period and found that almost 1,500 involved a sex-offense.
