In 2019, police in Mount Pleasant, SC called emergency services and demanded they inject James C. Britt with ketamine. At that point, police had already restrained Britt with handcuffs and leg shackles and had their knees pressed on his neck and back for 15 minutes.

After being injected with ketamine, Britt's heart stopped. Britt never regained consciousness. "I just can't breathe correctly" were Elijah McClain's last words as he was already handcuffed and had been placed in a chokehold by officers who had called paramedics to inject him with ketamine. After he was injected, officers slapped him to make sure he was unconscious.
