After raising their firsts in protest, Tommie Smith and John Carlos were suspended from the U.S. national team and kicked out of the Olympic Village. Peter Norman, the Australian competitor who had lent his gloves to Smith and Carlos, was also blackballed from future Olympics.
While Smith and Carlos were punished for their show of solidarity, the head of the Olympics at the time explained that Nazi salutes during the 1936 Olympics were acceptable but what Smith and Carlos did was a violent breach of Olympic principles.
