If those on the right try to cynically use John Lewis as an example of "the right way to protest," remind them that, at the time, a majority of Americans opposed Lewis and the causes he fought for. History has vindicated him, and it will vindicate this generation of protesters.
A 1963 Gallup poll found that more than 60% of white Americans had an unfavorable view of the March on Washington that John Lewis helped organize. Much like today, his peaceful protests were met with violence, both by police and by white vigilantes.
