152 years ago today, the 14th Amendment was ratified, and Black people in the United States who had previously been denied citizenship were finally recognized as citizens.

The Fourteenth Amendment was, in one sense, a recognition that our original Constitution was defective. A document that condoned slavery and treated Black people as less than fully human would never and could never establish justice and secure the blessings of liberty for all.
