Amy Cooper's actions built off a long violent history of white people falsely accusing Black people of crimes that they're then arrested and incarcerated for. That "history" is very much part of our present, in which Black people are arrested based on flimsy or false accusations.

Addressing that requires us to challenge the criminal legal system that allows cops to lie and suppress evidence; a system that allows DAs to put forth testimony they know is false, and that forces as many as 95% of defendants to accept plea deals, regardless of their innocence.

Prosecuting Amy Cooper is an easy way out. It allows us to tell ourselves that the problem is the Amy Coopers of the world. In reality, the problem is the system of violent policing that made her threat so dangerous & the criminal legal system that locks up millions of Black ppl.

One of the reasons why the Central Park incident was so disturbing was because Black people watching it instantly knew that if it hadn't been recorded, Christian Cooper very likely could've ended up arrested—or killed by police. Prosecuting Amy cooper does nothing to change that

The argument that prosecuting Amy Cooper may deter other white women from doing the same is appealing, but it's no different from the logic used to justify almost every other criminal penalty. And that logic has been used to lock up millions of Black people in this country.

Rejecting America's violent, racist criminal justice system requires us to reject the logic(s) that have been deployed to justify it. Locking someone up doesn't undo the harm that person has caused, and lots of evidence suggests it doesn't do much in the way of deterrence.

YES! There is this thing called the rule of law that we used to revere in this country. It is possible to critique and reform those systems without giving up on something that is pretty central to a functioning society.

Yes, it does. We can ask for systemic changes and want punishment. She deserves punishment.

Do you think she hasn’t been punished? Can you conceive Of a type of punishment that exists outside of a carceralSystem? And how do you believe punishment would help the overriding issue, her, or the victim?
