Almost every American, from an extremely young age, is taught to call the cops when they have a problem. Many people call the cops for explicitly racist reasons. Others have good intentions when they do so. In both types of scenarios, calling the cops can be lethal.
The primary responsibility for reducing the societal roles cops occupy falls to policymakers & elected officials. In the absence of their leadership, we should refuse to participate in a system that so often responds to poverty, homelessness, & mental health crises with violence.
I think that the real control/educational opportunity lies in defining, clearly why someone would want to involve police in a situation, at all. Change "See something/Say something" messaging to "Never call the cops."
