Policing is an institution forged in the fire of white supremacy, and designed to maintain a social order in which Black people, poor people, LGBTQ people, and immigrants are treated as subordinate. Oftentimes police use extreme violence to maintain that social order.

And very often the law enables, or at the very least, excuses, police violence. We can see this in all areas of the law—from qualified immunity to the Supreme Court cases that permit pretextual traffic stops and allow officers to pull people over for driving while Black.

All of this is to say it doesn't matter all that much whether an individual officer is a "bad apple" or a "good guy." Every single officer participates in a system that brings out the very worst in each of them; a system steeped in violence and anti-Black racism.

Has there been a comparative study done by reputable historians of the origins of police forces in the US and other countries, esp. Britain with its bobbies? Would be interesting to see how slavery, class, etc., shaped these forces.
