What is particularly insidious about Amy Cooper's threat is what she was able to leave unsaid. Simply saying she would call the cops and tell them an African-American man was threatening her was enough to convey her message: "I can marshal lethal force to have you killed."
This unspoken aspect of her threat undercuts the notion that white people are simply ignorant about police brutality. It suggests something much more sinister—that Amy Cooper, like so many others, is perfectly fine with a system in which police can kill Black people with impunity
As Kimberle Crenshaw (@sandylocks) has pointed out, this video is a distressing example of how whiteness is weaponized and used to intimidate POC.
Whiteness functions both as a shield that protects those who are white, and as a weapon that is deployed against those who are not.
