In the face of ever more incidents of violence and terrorism targeted at Black Americans, it's important to remember that, as a country, we aren't "better than this." These incidents are part and parcel of American history and that history must be reckoned with.
Black Americans cannot be safe—at home, at the park, or anywhere else—until all Americans are willing to confront that ugly history, and understand how it shapes anti-Black violence in the here and now. As we saw again today, the failure to do so has deadly consequences.
