I'm about halfway through Before The Storm, by and The Absolute Book, by Elizabeth Knox. I must say that Before the Storm is making me feel a little better about the US today. There was some bat shit crazy stuff going on then and we lived to tell the tale.

The conclusion my friend John is straining for here reduces to a single word: PROPAGANDA. And all-too-successful propaganda at that. Liberals, mainstream media, feel free to criticize instances. But please please please: refuse to play the reactionaries' game.

Political sophisticates in my orbit tell me it's all about the Venezuelan vote in Florida. Great! Now we can look forward to another 60-year humanitarian catastrophe that accomplished 0% of its strategic aims, the Cuban economic embargo.

..who secretly passed the party's donor lists to sort of right-wing groups the rest of the RNC was busy denouncing as extremist. So the RNC chair had a staffer break into the finance guy's desk. The staffer was caught; the Goldwater guy put out a press release.

The story of Trump beefing on the RNC for using his name for fundraising reminds me (of course) of a similar cock-up from 56 years ago: in 1965 the only Goldwaterite kept on at the RNC was the finance guy...

Proud of a certain formerly centrist senator's retreat from his former taste for neoliberalism and law 'n' order. But when a nation whose defense budget is 0.1 percent of ours poses an "unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security": fuuuuuuuck

Remember, however, that this is the paramilitary arm of the over half of the Republican mrmbers of Congress who voted that the opposing party cannot legitimately win an election.

The people making this decision to suspend Congress are skirting breaking their oath of office. Mobs do not get to dictate when the United States Congress conducts its business. That's the main point of the Constitution to which they swore an oath to preserve and defend.

Negotiating with terrorists. Why not model patriotism, valor, show that Congress does not bend to armed threats? Maybe they're terrified police will have to shoot a white person.

Listening to the Most Compassionate Perlstein. Community colleges are the backbone of working class mobility in the U.S. And the media does a crap job with them.

Great personal essay about the civic rot nurtured for decades under the guise of "Christianity" that found its apotheosis on 1/6, by the guy who gave me one of REAGANLAND's best stories.

Since it seems like years ago that I wrote this, I’m not embarrassed to say my math was off by one. Since VP needs 41 (not 40) senators to back her play, she effectively has 19 votes in her pocket on Byrd rule votes.
