COMING TO AMERICA Film 25 of Imagine you’re a young person in the 21st Century and famous movies of the last 20 years have been boiled down to gifs. That’s how I felt seeing Arsenio Hall in this movie, finally understanding the context for many gifs.

BRAVEN Film 24 of Ignore the Washington plates, this crime-action-thriller is as Canadian as the accents. Mamoa bests AQUAMAN with inventive action and a solid performance . Great cast. The extra smoking a pipe may be the best cinematic intro of recent memory.

FYRE Film 23 of Surprisingly good doc by the director of AMERICAN MOVIE about the titular social media disaster. The dick sucking story may be the best anecdote in a documentary of all time.

SENSE AND SENSIBILITY Film 22 of Had no idea that Emma Thompson wrote the script for this one. Didn’t exactly grab me, but I dug seeing Rickman as a romantic lead.

VELVET BUZZ SAW Film 20 of As a fan of the last Gilroy and Gyllenhaal’s last colalbo, was primed to dig this. I did not. Could’ve worked better if it settled on a consistent tone. Not vicious enough as a satire, and illogical, and unfrightening as a horror.

GHOST STORIES Film 19 of I was impressed by the stylishness of the direction. Normally I’m pretty good at spotting scares, but the directors did a good job at concealing them. The ending goes in a pretty wild directions.

KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS Film 18 of With the sheer amount of nudity in this, I can see why this animated family film didn’t make as much of an impact in North America as it did in France.

IRON MAN 2 Film 17 of Isn’t it odd that Justin Theroux wrote this? This movie is off the wall. Introducing War Machine by beating the shit out of a drunk Tony Stark would be the equivalent of introducing Captain Marvel after Bruce Banner ripped on a giant bong.

It is a very surreal experience to read an autobiographical comic book and be 85% certain that a supporting character is someone that you dated ages ago.

SERENITY (2019) Film 16 of This Beach Noir needs to be weirder to elevate its knotty execution. Like GLASS, the director approaches the core material as an outsider, but he so woefully misunderstands it, that large portions of the movie are abstruse.

GET ME ROGER STONE Film 15 of I’m not sure that I buy the premise of the doc, that Stone is the architech of Trump’s success, but it makes a strong case for his influence. Very amusing to see Manafort as a jovial talking head now that’s staring at life in jail.

THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS Film 14 of The premise, 3 teens that discover that they're triplets, is tantalizing, but the real deliciousness is why they were separated . The revelations are intriguing, but it quickly loses gas as we reach a trite, unsatisfying ending

THE INCREDIBLE HULK Film 13 of With parkour, super heroes, and an extended sequence in the Brazilian favelas, this must be the most 2008 movie of ‘08. Lumpy and weak, compared to the latter Marvel movies I still dig the exquisite opening sequence

GLASS Film 11 of Shyamalan goes full Kojima (or perhaps even David Cage) with an alienating, didactic, and ocassionally goofy, conclusion to the UNBREAKABLE trilogy and I’m down with this shit. Dug how slyly red herrings we’re sprinkled throughout the movie.

LOVING Film 11 of I ended up liking this more than loving it. Nichols goes against convention by jettisoning most of the procedural elements on the court case and puts the focus on the couple. Didn’t work for me, but an admirable spin on the biopic.
