    One year later on June 19,1866 many of those who were enslaved in Galveston began to hold celebrations commemorating June 19 - Juneteenth, the day they learned of their freedom. On June 17, President Biden signed legislation officially declaring Juneteenth as a federal holiday.

    On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers rode into Galveston, TX to tell the enslaved that the Civil War was over & they were now free. Those enslaved in Galveston were the last to hear the news about the end of the Civil War and Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
