Hi Portland! I see a lot of you are getting interested in how our police bureau works. As someone who’s reported on Portland cops for a few years, I’m THRILLED. To help get you up to speed, I thought I’d share some past stories I’ve written on policing in Portland:

  3. To understand why America has tolerated (and rewarded) police violence for decades, you need to first understand police unions.

  9. Lownsdale Park has been reduced to a square of dusty dirt that, when even lightly walked over, fills the air with hints of tear gas. Sat down on a patch littered with pepper ball shells.

Not sure how long I’ll be sticking around tonight (here for a specific interview), but will certainly be checking back in. Looks like there’s a crowd at Rev Hall tonight too, like the olde days.

Popping in on downtown Portland for the second night without feds (sort of). Night 64? Someone’s filling in parts of the fence between the courthouse/public with hardening foam to “block them from shooting us.”

In addition to some pretty glaring Constitutional issues, legal observers wearing ACLU vests have filed declarations in this case saying federal agents targeted them for assault after Judge Simon ordered them not to do so

Judge Simon says he's considering an order that would "redefine 'journalist' as someone who is authorized by the ACLU." Says could issue identification similar to the blue vests they now give their legal observers. "This may or may not be a good idea," Simon says.

"The [officer] who frisked me did not wear a mask. I asked them to, and they laughed," said one person arrested in late June. Another, arrested in early July: “I would say I saw maybe 3... out of 20 officers wearing masks. I was blown away."

A 16-yr-old girl burned & left nearly deaf in her left ear. A filmmaker shot through his gas mask and into his eye w/ a pepper ball. A longtime activist's elbow snapped in half while walking away. A volunteer medic shot in the chest w/ tear gas. More

Just when you thought the Portland Police Bureau's leadership couldn't get any more complicated: The former police chief (who served for... 6 months) has been appointed as an assistant chief by the chief who replaced her.

Headed into a hearing where attorneys will argue and should face sanctions for continuing to assault journalists after a judge ordered them not to. Meanwhile, at the White House:

What's that? A night of Portland demonstrations with little police presence turned out to be the most peaceful in weeks? What could it mean? (All this and more in Good Morning, News!)
