More from ITV Housing Stories on the real physical and mental harm being caused to social housing tenants.

Does anyone know what the Expert Challenge Panel have said?

Am royally eff-offed by the whole thing, anyway. It can and should be better but there's no sign it will be, so spending any time trying to do anything feels pointless.

Let's have no more registered provider criticism of exempt accommodation providers while dirty loopholes like this exist. It's really hypocritical.

Also turns out the Regulator for Social Housing waived the ‘Decent Homes Standard’ on Clarion’s request on the Eastfields estate in 2014, meaning housing conditions were allowed to fall below the basic legal requirements, which they did. Top scoop.

Surprise, surprise -- the system denies tenants a voice. Well, it makes sense, they might otherwise say something that upsets the system...

I always forget* the Value For Money ratings, too. God knows what they're supposed to mean now. It all feels like a very unfunny joke.

A G1 rating is now basically meaningless, is where we are at the moment. It has no easily-understandable logical meaning.

The point is that landlords still have to be regulated for financial viability to make sure they are spending money on things the government approves of. And in theory to regulate their governance, although here the definitions are doing a lot of heavy lifting.

It is pretty frustrating that the government hasn't given the Regulator the power to tackle what is basically slum landlordism, but this is a political decision where they must figure improving people's homes and lives won't win any votes.

Unfortunately that's how it is, until the much-discussed but not-acted-on Charter for Social Housing Residents makes it to legislation. The government have decided not to do this, and having previously turned down a proposal to give residents a say remains complicit in failure.

As well as not speaking to any tenants on Eastfields, not a single property was visited or inspected by the Regulator. The Regulator only spoke to Clarion & “third parties”. So an inquiry into how tenant’s complaints were dealt with by Clarion didn’t involve a single tenant.

Rats, leaks, collapsed ceilings. What we found on this estate led to an inquiry by the Social Housing Regulator. That inquiry has cleared Clarion, finding no evidence of “organisational failure.” We’ve now learned not a single tenant was spoken to as part of the inquiry. Not 1.

System not fit for purpose. We need the Social Housing White Paper enacting into law. The has both hands tied behind it’s back.

Paying to be treated terribly, paying again for the Regulator to say it's fine to be treated terribly through fees that also come out of your rent, and then basically left to duke it out at the Ombudsman or in court while you also pay for NHF membership et cetera.

Every membership fee paid by residents, too, through rent or other charges.

Applies to other membership organisations, and other organisations too, of course. The self-policing thing really isn't working.

You can be a landlord that keeps thousands of tenants in damp, mouldy, vermin-infested homes and still be an member, on the plus side.
