    This 👇🏻 by and of course that 👇🏻by . For God’s sake, is it really so hard to consult with allies who have been in the fight with us for (checks watch) 19 - no, *71* years? And that’s not counting WWI and WWII at this point. For God’s sake.

    Our Allies, who were NOT attacked on 9-11, have stuck with us for 19 years and suffered more than 1140 casualties. Failing to consult in advance is not only diplomatic malpractice; it is also unconscionable to do that to those who fought and died with us & provided $1B+/year.

    That's the appropriate civil-military outcome: the person who gets elected has a right to enact their policies, with the active assistance of their political appointees (who ought to be Senate confirmed, though), even over the objections of the military.

    I won't wade into what is a good or bad policy decision. But it seems clear the president is carrying this out on his own, with his senior political appointees in line and the generals saluting after their recommendation was disregarded.

    The real news here is that Trump's advisers convinced him to settle for a *partial* withdrawal, rather than going down to zero. In recent weeks, NSA Robert O'Brien & Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Milley argued that 2,500 was "a responsible middle ground."

    This is diplomatic malpractice. We have nearly 30 partners with us in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unilateral moves without consultation erodes trust and confidence in the United States. It will be harder to build alliances—America’s comparative advantage over any competitor.

    He decided to join after 9/11 and did four tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He always wanted to help. He was 39 when he died of COVID-19. His son was two days old. They never met. Sergeant Michael Keene will be laid to rest tomorrow in South Carolina. Rest easy, brother.
