Allow me to mention that from the image alone you CANNOT deduce whether this is science fiction illustration or not. It could well be an illustration of "The Lost World of Time" - of one of the adventures of Curt Newton (better know by his nom de guerre "Captain Future").

I looked at the picture and immediately thought that something was odd. Taking a closer look the culprit is the lowermost pack of debris (the one with a yellowish tint) that looks as if it is flying in the wrong direction.
-
And that's more than a gut feelingv Assuming that all pieces have approximately the same density, the larger relative surface of smaller ones means more deceleration by the atmosphere, hence they are slower and conclusively are indicate the direction the mass is coming from.
-
You mean the chunk that's done an atmospheric burst?
-
Yepp. However, the burst can't be the reason - it would send matter in every direction, not just in one. You need a directed explosion for this pattern - extremely improbable for comets and asteroids. It however occurred when Challenger exploded some 30 years ago

-
Actually the meteor that airburst over Russia a few years ago doesn't go in every direction. It flares out, with the majority continuing in the same direction of travel.pic.twitter.com/JwlJBTinPu
