Last month I gave a lecture . It was on ways me and have seen people get stuck trying to make and use data standards. If you missed it (firstly, where were you??) I've started to write up the content. Here's the first! Discussion appreciated!

Good read from on why fixing the plumbing matters: . What needs more discussion is timescales: infrastructure can take years to show *any* value. How do we keep those projects afloat when people expect value/capability immediately?

Interesting to see (or is that ?) pick up a contract for delivering a "digital identity prototype" in Scotland… are the Scottish government about to embark on a government-backed Personal Data Store system?

Where have I seen this idea of having a scanable permit before? Oh yeah... 2/2

Wow, just seen a NSW Digital Driver License in the wild. Really cool that it's as acceptable as the physical card is and ALSO contains a scanable barcode to verify the information... Now that's a real step forward for this service. 1/2

Some interesting notes about UPRNs in here. I didn't realise something as presumably well-established as a Jobcentre building might not even have an associated UPRN. And they're still not fully . More fuel for the fire of opening up the UK's data infrastructure?

"We should resist the instinct to see party as the ‘problem’ in politics… It forces egotistic MPs to accept a discipline without which parliaments have always been unmanageable… It's the unheroic imperfection of the party system that makes it invaluable"

A photo of the old Highgate Archway carrying Hornsey Lane. It was replaced by the current version, authorised by an act of Parliament in 1894 and costing £27,000. Notice how it has the main arch and then a second level of viaduct on top. I think I prefer it.

    HIGHGATE ARCHWAY, LOOKING NORTHWARDS.
Highgate Archway will soon be a thing of the past. The London County Council ate soon to widen and improve the Archway Road, and to alter and reconstruct the viaduct which carries Hornsey Lane over it. The cost of the work is estimated at £27,000. It must be owned that, picturesque as is the Archway, it ought, in the public interests, to have been reconstructed long ago.

Interesting what the big players are putting forward as response to the rise of adblockers. Disagree that "everything will be fine, because web standards are open innit" – ad tech has been notoriously averse to compromising as part of standards processes.

Some good tips about engaging non-technical users in data, from . Still got q's about how to learn from (vulnerable) citizens who are *un*engaged with gov. Sure, this is a wider problem, but as relevant to open data as anywhere else.

This is a great thread on everything that sucks with tech that no-one cares about

Just finished reading collaborative data guide and it's GREAT. Loads of great patterns in here, even for data projects with narrow participation. Already influenced my thinking and excited to make these patterns work in !

This thread cuts to the heart of what’s wrong with the current approach to data literacy -> it’s a multi-disciplinary thing and the technical aspects are the least important

So non-technical training in data science is the most important training because it is the area that is most lacking from formal qualifications.
