Notions of identity are deeply held but to divorce the 'me-ness' of 'me' from the environment that created 'me' seems odd. Long, great read.https://twitter.com/lilylilymaynard/status/902341485739290624 …

Hey RW I'm a huge fan but hmm. Would prefer to see more from the kid's perspective. Rather than a parent heckling their gender-fluid child.

You read the child's response then? Btw, I've written at book length about how gender gets in the way of everyone.

Yes I read it. We agree that invasive treatments should not be carelessly chosen, but the mom is more confused about gender & picking on kid

That's an unusual take on it. She said her daughter could wear what she liked and love who she wanted.

I recognize that and do not wish to put her or anyone on the defense. But both mom & kid seemed super concerned about "passing" either way -

didn't get that at all, her daughter was encouraged to be herself, not a female stereotype.

What's concerning is the amount of young women binding breasts and opting out of girlhood, because society has made girlhood so toxic.

Sure, girlhood is toxic af. All girls experience that. But only a few feel very strongly about being a boy or non-binary. Let's let them be.

Problem is, too many girls now see being trans as an escape. ACTUAL transsexualism very rare in the past. We need more nuance in discussion.
