I think some of it may be normal confusion of teenage years. But social contagion factor is likely significant.

I think it's a modern contagion. 20 or 30 years ago, very few girls were questioning whether they were actually female.

Promotion of genderism with its sexist stereotypes has made "girl" synonymous w/ "submissive" & "princess." Who wants that?
